When did calf roping become tie down roping? I guess I been out of the
game longer than I thought...why the change?

He is referring to the name they use to describe the event. I also noticed
that this is the first time I have heard it called "Tie Down Roping." A
rose by any other name etc.

Damned if I know why it's become politically correct to refer to "calf
roping" as "tiedown roping." "Calf roping" is about as accurate a
description as it gets, while the term "tiedown roping" is ambiguous as
hell because an animal is tied down in both steer roping and team
tying.

For the youngsters amongst us, "team tying" is a form of hard and fast
team roping in which the header is required to get down and tie two legs
of the steer together with the tie ending in a square knot.

I was shocked when moving to California to find steer roping is
illegal. It used to be great fun to go to a roping in Montana and
Wyoming when I lived there. Not sure what you can still do in
Texas...everything I imagine. I'll see when I get there in a few
months.

Glad to be leaving California in the rearview

That happend a few months back. I am not sure if California made Calf Roping
illegal hence the name change, or it was a move to try to keep ARAs of their
backs. Comments? As I don't really know why it happened either.

Did California outlaw calf roping , too? I hadn't heard that, but
anything can happen here in the "late great golden state". I know
steer roping has been outlawed since before I showed up here 3 years
ago.

I may be wrong...but if I remember correctly my Dad has said that "calf
roping" was called "tie-down roping" way back in the beginnings of
professional rodeo. If I were a great researcher I would try and verify.
However, I'm just hoping some old timer will either set me streight or
agree. Haha!
